A Song Title Poem
A MAN WITH A BAND AND OTHER HITS
I don’t know where to begin other than in these gloomy times I feel lost, but it could be far worse
As I know where to find people for relief and can write as part of the midnight special before the
Pull of sleep greets me, but sometimes the bad moon rising over the mountain with brilliant lights
Creeping from behind the curtains and this cues the commotion of the mind to take some shape.
At least I can sleep in peace as no one has to bother me for anything and while the working man
Title belongs to me some days, I’m glad I can sleep because the night time is the right time for a
Mental shut down because as long as I can see the light of day there is time for trouble to occur.
I wonder about the fortunate sons and daughters who have to get by with little sleep so close to
Battlefields that a few winks are considered a luxury, while the tired souls feeling blue as various
Enemies could be up around the bend as the servants of despair because people can’t get along.
Please understand that I support our troops and veterans, so before you accuse me of not being a
Good person answer me this, have your ever seen the rain of bullets with the thundering of a vast
Explosion as you run through the jungle or over rough sands all in the name of implied freedom?
Wars have plagued our world since the dawn of time and glory be to those who answered the call
Not knowing if they would make it back or even treated civilly as the rude awakenings of people
Who lurk down on the corner with evil faces to show they’re not fond of soldiers and what they
Endure to keep others, who lack a hot rod heart full of patriotism, safe from many unseen threats.
I’ve heard stories of soldiers who’ve come home and been stared at like “it” came out of the sky
Almost like airplane waste or space junk in clothes attempting to blend in like a chameleon and if
The best welcome wagon is like that, who’ll stop the rain of tears that heroes shouldn’t shed while
Silently wishing they hadn’t come back just to become some living effigy from our darker times.
I’m sure no matter wherever you go there is great troop pain, pilot sorrow and sailor’s lament for all
The cruel treatment of being a soldier even if minimal action was seen and thoughts of wish I could
Meet the approval of everyone I meet, however it’s hard to hideaway on the battlefield of civilian life
Full of people giving tall orders and friends around you gone in a flash as if you’re not born to move
Then what good are you if you can’t bring the brief peace door to door after surviving hostile forces.
There aren’t enough miracles in life and even if you could walk on the water of a raging ocean, the
Seeds of hatred are still inside of everyone and such a grim display stretches like cotton fields with so
Little effort that it doesn’t matter if you were born on a bayou or from a cosmic storm that hiding
Behind false smiles doubt and disdain that many like myself call it “pretending to be human” and
How society has lasted so long is baffling with so much evil energy tearing up the country where
Sometimes, it’s hard to scrape by in the trenches and while some are rocking all over the world in
Ignorant bliss, I wonder how the old man down the road who has seen several wars come and go
Amongst the rough tides of fate unable to sail away in an attempt to find a moment of happiness.
Even with all the advances in warfare and improved soldier protection, it’s still Deja Vu with the
Countless lives lost over reluctance to talk things out and soon the panic spreads all over again,
Making many wonder what has changed as whatever conflict still stands centerfield ready to for
Foiling any escapes because the sinister purpose has to run its course through an unhealed world,
So, if a someday never comes for everyone to let out a sigh of relief, naturally we’re all doomed.
Now that you’ve heard what I’ve said, what are you gonna do to brighten someone’s life whether
Soldier or civilian because we all need someone to hold when the world loses its glow and such a
Bond can be good for sharing dark stories and if you can’t take it like a friend, they pray that you
Avoid tragedy and sit quietly by the side of the road watching others march forever towards glory.
I wrote this for a friend years ago who served in the Vietnam War. He had seen the horrors that were kept out of the public eye. War is a terrible experience for everyone and some don’t have the choice to remain on the sidelines as conflict escalates and more soldiers are needed. The draft was something people wanted to avoid in those days, but if you’re called to action and didn’t have any reason to keep you out of the trenches, you went to war.
